Running payroll in Oman is no longer just about calculating salaries. Employers must pay through the Wage Protection System (WPS), register eligible Omani employees with the Social Protection Fund (SPF), and keep accurate records of contracts, allowances and documents.
What the Wage Protection System requires
Private-sector salaries are paid electronically through approved banks or financial institutions, which report the payments. That makes errors visible: wrong amounts, late payments or missing employees show up quickly.
Social Protection Fund for Omani staff
The SPF (which replaced PASI) manages social insurance for Omani nationals. Employers register eligible employees and keep contribution data up to date every month, including when employees join, leave or get a salary change.
Common payroll mistakes
- Salary data in one spreadsheet, attendance in another and overtime on paper.
- Bank salary files prepared manually, with typos in account numbers.
- Joiners, leavers and salary changes not updated on time.
- Expired passports, resident cards or labour cards discovered too late.
