How to Choose ERP Software in Oman: A Buyer's Guide

What Omani SMEs should check before buying ERP software: local support, OMR and VAT, industry fit, implementation time, total cost and data security.

Choosing an ERP is one of the biggest technology decisions a growing Omani company makes. The wrong choice means a year of frustration; the right one pays for itself in stock accuracy, faster invoicing and better decisions. Here is what to check.

1. Local presence and support

Ask where the implementation team sits and how support works. A vendor with a Muscat office can run requirement workshops at your premises, train staff face to face and visit during go-live. Ask for response times in writing.

2. Oman VAT, OMR and e-invoicing

Your ERP must calculate 5% Oman VAT correctly, produce VAT summaries for your quarterly return and work in OMR with multi-currency purchasing. Ask each vendor how they will handle Fawtara e-invoicing for your phase.

3. Industry fit

A generic ERP can be bent to fit almost anything — at a cost. If you trade marble, run a hotel or manage property, look for a system with that industry built in. You will pay less for customisation and go live faster.

4. Implementation time and method

Ask for a written plan with phases, responsibilities and a go-live date. For most SMEs, 3–8 weeks is realistic. Be wary of projects with no clear data-migration plan.

5. Total cost of ownership

Cost itemQuestions to ask
Licence / subscriptionPer user, per branch or flat? What happens when you grow?
ImplementationFixed price or time-and-materials? What is included?
CustomisationHourly rate? Who owns the custom code?
Support & updatesIncluded or annual AMC? Response times?
HostingCloud included? Backups? Data location?

6. Data security and ownership

Check that each client's data is isolated, connections are encrypted, backups run daily and you can export your data at any time.

7. Usability

Ask for a demo using your own products and a real scenario — a purchase, a sale with VAT and a stock transfer. If your storekeeper can't follow it, adoption will suffer.
